Disk (Disc) Sander Safety
The disk sander comprises of a circular plate that normally operates in a vertical or horizontal position.
Portable units can be utilized in all planes. A cloth or paper-backed abrasive disk is attached to the plate with adhesive, cement or other medium. The diameter of the disk indicates the size of the machine. Common sizes range from 2½” to twelve inches.
Safe Practices:
- Only the operator may turn the power on or off.
- Hold the work securely.
- Always sand on the down travel side of the disk.
- Make adjustments only when the sander is at a dead stop.
- Keep fingers away from the abrasive surface on the sander.
- Feed the stock into the abrasive material at a moderate rate of feed and pressure.
- Excessive pressure against the disk should be avoided.
- Be sure the work is held firmly against the table.
- Small stock 1″ or smaller in length should not be sanded.
- Use the disk sander for sanding outside curves or angles only.
- The disk sander is not to be used for joinery, squaring stock, etc.
- The table should be adjusted so that it is no more than 1/8″ from the disk.
- Make sure the disk is on properly. A dull or loose disk should be replaced or repaired immediately.
- A 2″ margin of safety should be maintained at all times.
- Any disk that is loose should be repaired or replaced immediately. Stop using when the disk is loose.
